2023: Launch of Southeast Asia's largest floating solar power plant

On November 8, 2023, Indonesian President Joko Widodo opened Southeast Asia's largest floating solar power plant. The commissioning of this farm is expected to help the country switch to clean energy from renewable sources and reduce coal consumption.

The station is located on the Chirata Reservoir in West Java Province, approximately 110 km from Jakarta. As of mid-November 2023, the site has a peak capacity of 192 MW. This is enough to provide electricity to approximately 50,000 average households.

Today is a historic day because our cherished dream of building a large-scale renewable power plant has finally come true. We managed to build the largest floating solar power plant in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world, Widodo said.

The farm uses more than 340 thousand solar panels, which are organized into 13 arrays. At the same time, the station occupies approximately 4% of the reservoir area. According to the norms in force in Indonesia, up to 20% of the area of this reservoir can be allocated for a floating solar power plant. Thus, in the future, the power of the farm can be increased fivefold - up to 1000 MW. For comparison: the hydroelectric power plant installed at the Chirata dam has a capacity of about 1008 MW.

The floating solar power plant project was developed by PLN Nusantara Power, a division of the Indonesian state utility company Perusahaan Pendidikan Negara (PLN), and the renewable energy corporation Masdar of, UAE a division of Mubadala Investment Company. The cost of building the farm is estimated at $108.7 million.[1]
