2026: Death of 9 patients - criminal case initiated

In January 2026, in the city of Prokopyevsk, Kemerovo Region, an outbreak of influenza A was recorded in a neuropsychiatric boarding school, resulting in the death of nine residents. The incident was reported by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Kuzbass on January 29, 2026.

According to the regional Ministry of Health, positive samples for the influenza A virus were detected in 50 out of 128 residents of the institution. Two were diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia. Quarantine has been declared in the boarding school.

As a result of investigative actions, it was established that the spread of infection occurred due to improper performance of duties by officials and employees of the institution. During the inspection, violations of sanitary and epidemiological rules were revealed. A criminal case has been initiated into the incident.

Disinfection was carried out in all buildings and catering units of the boarding school. According to the press service of the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor, all residents and employees were examined, the sick were hospitalized. To provide assistance, an additional team of the regional hospital was sent to Prokopyevsk.

According to Kommersant, the governor of Kuzbass Ilya Seredyuk instructed to conduct unscheduled inspections of all boarding schools in the region. According to Seredyuk, materials on the situation in the Prokopyevsky institution were transferred to law enforcement agencies. The situation will be taken under special control by the human rights ombudsman in Russia Tatyana Moskalkova.

According to the publication in the publication Ngs.42, the first cases of the disease could appear back in November 2025. Patients were not hospitalized, and the issuance of antipyretic drugs is prohibited. The epidemiological investigation in this boarding school was carried out earlier, in 2024. According to RIA Novosti, over the past ten years, 50 inspections have been carried out at the institution, in 12 cases violations have been identified.[1]
