2020: Novak Djokovic bought an 80% stake in QuantBioRes
In mid-January 2022, Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic acquired an 80% stake in the biotechnology company QuantBioRes, which develops a drug for coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. The developer expects to begin clinical trials in the UK in the summer of 2022. It is reported by Reuters with reference to the executive director of the company Ivan Lonkarevich.
According to Ivan Lonkarevich, Novak Djokovic acquired the company's shares back in June 2020, Lonkarevich refused to call the amount of investment from the Serbian tennis player. According to a representative of QuantBioRes, the company is developing a peptide that prevents the infection of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) of human cells. Novak Djokovic and his wife Elena Ristic own 40.8% and 32.9% of the company's shares, respectively, according to the Danish register of companies.
In early January 2022, Djokovic was deported from Australia, where he was going to take part in the Australian Open. He was detained at Melbourne Airport due to the fact that he could not provide documents on medical exemption from COVID-19 vaccination to the country's border guards. After the trial, the athlete's visa was canceled, and Novak Djokovic himself was warned of the need to leave the country. The tennis player challenged in court the legality of the decision of the Australian Border Guard and won the case, but the Australian authorities on January 14, 2022 decided to revoke the tennis player's visa and deport him from the country. The athlete filed a new appeal, but it was rejected.
As noted in Reuters, doubts arose about whether Djokovic will be able to play at the next Grand Slam tournament, the French Open, which starts at the end of May 2022. The Australian Minister of Sports said there would be no exceptions to the new vaccine pass laws. He also noted that more than 95% of the 100% of the best male tennis players and tennis players included in the ratings of their tournaments are vaccinated.[1]
