2022: Hacker Attack
In mid-December 2022, information appeared that the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital, a medical facility in California's Riverside County, was subjected to a hacker attack that leaked personal information and had to turn off computer systems.
The 79-bed hospital, located in the small town of Banning, has already confirmed the cyber attack. It is reported that the attackers gained unauthorized access to the IT infrastructure of the hospital on October 29, 2022. To investigate the incident, specialists from a third party were involved.
As a result of the cyber incident, a large amount of personal information was stolen: these are the names of patients, their addresses, dates of birth, medical card numbers, clinical information, dates of visits, etc. In some cases, the stolen data contains Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, financial information and health insurance information. The attackers remained in the IT network of the medical institution until November 10, 2022, when the attack was identified, and the security services turned off the hospital's computer systems.
The hospital did not say how many patients were potentially affected by the break-in, nor whether the incident was related to a ransomware program. But it is known that on November 10, 2022, the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital was attacked by malware, due to which the electronic medical records system had to be turned off for six days. Employees of the institution were forced to switch to paper document management, and the issuance of test results was difficult. The hack affected archival information about patients stored on the hospital's servers. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.[1]
