2020: Building a company

On September 4, 2020, Sberbank announced that it plans to spin off its SberDigitalAuto department as a separate subsidiary of Sber Automotive Technologies (SberAutoTech). Part of its shares will be used for a long-term motivation program for employees of this company. And the general director of the new "daughter" will be Andrei Vasilevsky, head of the SberDigitalAuto department, who in the past oversaw the development and implementation of the Yandex.Auto automotive platform.

As explained in the bank, this department was created in April 2019 with the aim of building a technological infrastructure for the creation and development of automotive services in the Sberbank ecosystem.

It is impossible to imagine a modern system without navigation, and in this area SberDigitalAuto works closely with the company of the Sberbank ecosystem - 2GIS, as well as without driving a car, various multimedia services. We believe that we all have to come up with real car services and create them, "said TAdviser in Sberbank.

The Sberbank website for searching for personnel in this project says that this is a new direction that "will make the use of AI in cars as familiar as unbreakable glass and control of electronics over the engine."

Our team has a goal, and this is a revolution in the world of the auto industry in the very near future. We are creating not just a drone, but a car with artificial intelligence (AI). We think about the comfortable movement of goods and people, and for this we are creating a platform that will unite the best that is in IT, - stated in the same place.

Sberbank is creating an automotive platform that allows the distribution of Russian technologies into cars. These are smart driver assistants, unmanned technologies, and standards for interacting with a smart road. The Sberbank ecosystem provides unique opportunities for the development of this area, says Andrey Vasilevsky.

It is planned to release the first unmanned vehicles on public roads in late 2020 - early 2021. And in 2021, test operation of solutions based on the Sber automotive operating system will begin, the bank said.

Answering the question of TAdviser about what technologies the developed operating system will be based on, Sberbank noted that "figuratively speaking, each operating system has a little Linux." Before the official announcements, the bank chose not to disclose details.

Sberbank also told TAdviser that unmanned technologies are mainly developed by themselves, but already interact with a wide range of Russian and foreign companies. In the description of the direction of technologies for unmanned vehicles on the personnel website of Sberbank, it is said that the bank is ready to cooperate with startups and potential partners:

We are well aware that it makes no sense to do everything ourselves. From scratch, services and systems will be developed that we can do better and faster than the market. But we are still ready to take a lot from the market to speed up the withdrawal of our products.

As of early September, a number of vacancies in the SberDigitalAuto division can be found on the Internet. For example, the bank is looking for interface developers for drone engineers, auto-electric engineers who could design the arrangement of sensors on an unmanned vehicle and integrate them with software and a car into a single platform, art directors.

It is noteworthy that on the same day Yandex announced that it was separating its direction of unmanned vehicles into a separate company - Yandex Self-Driving Group (Yandex SDG). So far, this area is part of the Yandex.Taxi group of companies. After the restructuring, Yandex will buy out part of Uber's stake in Yandex SDG, as well as additionally invest $100 million in the new company and issue a convertible loan for another $50 million. As a result, Yandex's share in Yandex SDG will be 73%, Uber's share will be 19%, and the remaining shares will go to a motivation program for employees, the company said.

The company tested the first self-driving car prototypes in the spring of 2017. Yandex says that as of September 2020, 130 of its unmanned vehicles are driving on public roads in Russia, the United States and Israel.
