At the end of January 2022, Shell launched one of the world's largest enterprises for the production of green hydrogen. The 20 MW cell, created by Shell New Energy, is located in the Hebei province of China, it is designed for road transport needs for the period of the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, which will be held from February 4 to 20, 2022.

The electrolyser presented is a joint venture between Shell China and Zhangjiakou City Transport Construction Investment Holding Group, which began to cooperate in November 2020.

According to Reuters, Shell's electrolyzer, located in Zhangjiakou, will provide about half of the total supply of green hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles in the competition zone.

Chinese officials said that all 26 Olympic facilities in Beijing and Hebei province will be 100% powered by renewable energy sources, and more than 700 hydrogen-powered vehicles will be involved.

According to Shell's statement, the companies plan to increase plant capacity to 60 MW in the next two years. In October 2021, Shell announced that it was considering investing in a 150 MW hydrogen cell in China.
