Development of technology for cheap extraction of rare earth metals, without which electronics cannot be produced
Scientists of the Siberian Federal University have created economical methods for the production of rare earth metals used in the production of electronic components. This became known in October 2025.
The researchers proposed using two types of available materials as sorbents to extract valuable elements. The first option is based on polymer polyamines, which are used as antiseptics in disinfection of premises and purification of water in swimming pools. The second method involves the use of sawdust.
RussiaSergey Verkhovets, Vice-Rector of the Siberian Federal University for Promising Projects, noted that the sorbents obtained demonstrate high efficiency and sensitivity to rare and rare earth elements. Materials have predetermined characteristics and can be recreated in various conditions by people without special chemical training.
Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Leading Researcher of the Laboratory NL-2 SFU Vladimir Losev explained that one of the sorbents is obtained using inorganic oxides modified with polymeric polyamines. This material can be used not only for the isolation of rare earth metals, but also in other industries.
To create a sorbent from wood sawdust, their surface is subjected to modification, which gives the material the ability to extract noble and rare earth metals in large volumes. The technology allows the use of readily available raw materials, which significantly reduces process costs.
The high cost of extracting rare earth metals from ore forces scientists to look for alternative materials. Ore deposits containing rare earth elements are common on the planet, but their extraction and subsequent processing are complex and costly processes.
The methods created in the SPU solve the problem of the high cost of obtaining valuable metals through the use of affordable components. The technology does not require special equipment and can be implemented in various geographical points.[1]
Opening of the R&D Center to train specialists in digitalization of the oil and gas sector
Rosneft has opened the Center for Research and Development at the Institute of Oil and Gas of the Siberian Federal University. The work of the center will contribute to attracting young scientists to participate in research and development work. The projects cover the current tasks of the oil and gas industry and the digitalization of production. Students and graduate students of the university will have a unique opportunity to find a job in engineering specialties at the company's enterprises. Employment is possible even while studying at a higher educational institution. This was reported by the press service of Rosneft on October 8, 2025.
The center's tasks include mathematical and numerical modeling of complex technological equipment. Modeling covers non-standard equipment for the production and processing of hydrocarbons. Chemical processes require in-depth research to optimize production. Research in the field of new technologies is aimed at improving the efficiency of the industry. Digitalization of the oil and gas sector is impossible without qualified specialists.
The successful participation of undergraduate and graduate students in the center's projects provides practical experience. Knowledge in the field of modern technologies is used to solve real production problems. Young professionals are mastering process modeling software. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are being introduced into production management. The Internet of Things optimizes monitoring of equipment in the fields. Big data is analyzed to predict hydrocarbon production.
The opening of the research and development center was initiated by the corporate research and design institute in Krasnoyarsk. The organization's specialists are already working with students of the Institute of Oil and Gas of the Siberian Federal University. Young scientists led by Rosneft experts become winners of student international engineering competitions. IT championships in the oil and gas industry are held to identify talented developers. Participation in competitions improves the qualifications of future engineers. Prizes provide additional opportunities for career growth.[2]
Agreement with Rostelecom to train engineering students
Krasnoyarsk branch Rostelecom"" and Siberian Federal University (SFU) signed a cooperation agreement aimed at practical training of engineering students. Particular attention is paid to the faculties of the Institute of Engineering Physics and Radio Electronics. Rostelecom announced this on May 20, 2025.

In addition to the agreement, the participants will develop a five-year action plan. Among the nearest are the retrofitting of the Rostelecom training class on the basis of the Krasnoyarsk College of Radio Electronics and Information Technologies. Both college students and SFU will study in it.
2023: Launch of Atlant OS Administration Training Course
Siberian Federal University and Applite Group of Companies entered into a strategic partnership agreement. Apple Group announced this on October 11, 2023.
As part of the cooperation, the university launched a training course in the administration of the Atlant Russian operational system for IT specialists. Also, SFU and Applite Group of Companies plan to open an authorized training center at the university, and then a competence center based on one of the basic departments.
It is expected that within three years at least a thousand specialists will be trained to work with the Russian operating system. This will help popularize the use of domestic software solutions on the territory of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the entire Siberian District. Applite plans to help graduates with employment, including hiring them to expand the product line and develop technology.
For Apple, this is the first agreement with a higher education institution. The company intends to expand cooperation and will agree on partnership with universities in each federal district.
| Siberian Federal University actively cooperates with developers of domestic IT solutions. Creating the information environment of a modern enterprise is impossible without the skills of working with operating systems based on. Linux Therefore, it is especially promising to work with the Siberian company - the manufacturer of the operating system Atlas"." This is a long-term and systematic work, the purpose of which is to train a sufficient number of highly qualified IT specialists who will be able to work with. It is Russian software especially important for us that students receive not only theoretical, but also practical skills during their studies that will help with further employment, - said Denis Kapulin, Director of the Institute of Space and Information Technologies of the Siberian Federal University. |
| Cooperation with one of the leading Russian universities allows you to solve a number of strategic tasks. Our automated centralized software management solutions reduce the login threshold for IT professionals who have not yet encountered or have little experience with Linux. Thus, we not only train existing IT specialists in managing the IT infrastructure based on Atlant OS, but also improve their qualifications. This is extremely important for overcoming the personnel deficit, - said Artem Stytsenko, director of strategic development at Applite Group of Companies. |
