2024: China sanctions
On October 31, 2024, it became known that the large American manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles Skydio, which supplies products including to Ukraine, faced problems in the component procurement chain. This is due to sanctions from China.
China's Foreign Ministry has announced sanctions against Skydio, two other defense firms and 10 individuals after the US approved sales of strike drones to Taiwan, the Financial Times newspaper reported. Due to these restrictive measures, Skydio had problems acquiring a number of Chinese drone components, including battery packs. The American company is searching for alternative suppliers, and also turned to the US presidential administration for help. At the same time, Skydio says that China seeks to provide an advantage to its manufacturers.
This is a clarifying moment for the drone industry. If ever there was any doubt, these actions clearly show that the Chinese government will use supply chains as a weapon to advance its interests to the detriment of ours, "said Skydio CEO Adam Bry. |
He noted that Skydio has become a target for the Chinese authorities, as it is one of the leading drone companies outside the PRC. Due to the sanctions, Skydio "will have to take a radical step and limit the number of batteries to one per drone." In July 2024, the company announced that its unmanned aerial vehicles were being used by Ukraine, including for aerial photography.
The sanctions are an attempt to destroy a leading American drone company and increase the world's dependence on Chinese component suppliers, Bry added.[1] |
