2021: Cyber attack on hundreds of supermarkets
Hundreds of SPAR supermarkets have been hit by cyber attacks. This became known on December 7, 2021.
Due to the cyber attack, supermarkets were forced to accept only cash payments or close altogether.
SPAR is an international supermarket franchise for which 13,320 stores in 48 countries operate as of December 2021, but only the north of England was affected by the recent incident.
According to Lawrence Hunt & Co, a trading company that manages 25 stores in Lancashire County, "IT failure" affected cash registers, credit card processing systems and e-mail.
According to food supplier James Hall and Co, which serves 600 SPAR stores in Lancashire, its IT systems also suffered from a cyber attack.
As of Monday, December 6, 2021, many SPAR supermarkets in the north of England remained closed.
Although the incident has clear signs of an attack using extortion software that blocked critical IT systems, the nature of the cyber attack has not yet been officially disclosed.
The National Centre cyber security Great Britain issued an official statement on the subject. According to the statement, the department is aware of the incident[1]
