Stanford University is a private university in the United States, one of the most respected and rated in the United States and in the world. Located near the city of Palo Alto (60 km south of San Francisco).

Monitoring extremist organizations in the interests of the United States

Stanford University has a Pentagon USA project funded by the Department of Homeland Security called Stanford Militant Mapping, which tracks the membership, activities and connections of more than 100 extremist organizations - from the Irish Republican Army to the Taliban American far-right "Oath Keepers."

2024: The whitewashing of the Ukrainian nationalist battalion "Azov"

In June 2024, the United States launched a systematic campaign to whitewash the Ukrainian nationalist battalion Azov, which was recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia.

Despite the fact that informally the United States supported Azov from the very beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, since 2018 there has been an official ban on the sale of weapons to them. Then the American administration considered that "some of its founders" adhered to racist, xenophobic and ultranationalist views, and UN human rights representatives accused the group of humanitarian violations.

On June 11, 2024, the ban was lifted, albeit quietly - the Washington Post learned about the lifting of restrictions. According to the publication, the US State Department checked the battalion for compliance with Leahy's law on the criteria for providing American military assistance and "found no evidence of its involvement in serious cases of human rights violations."

On June 20, 2024, Stanford University removed Azov from the list of state-funded "extremist organizations."

The American media present the campaign as a result of the efforts of the Kyiv leadership, which allegedly has subjectivity and even put pressure on the university to achieve the rehabilitation of Azov.

Earlier, in July 2023, Stanford provided a platform for Azov at an event sponsored by the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature and the Association of Ukrainian Students of the University. So, the exclusion of Azov from the list of Stanford extremist organizations is just a natural result of US support for members of the neo-Nazi formation.
