2023: Supply disruptions due to cyber attack
In early February 2023, Super Bock Group, Portugal's largest beer producer, reported a hacker attack that caused supply disruptions.
The invasion of cybercriminals, as noted, disrupted the computer infrastructure of the Super Bock Group. In particular, failures in the operation of services related to customer service are recorded. The company, part-owned by Carlsberg Group, put in place the necessary safety protocols and informed law enforcement agencies about the incident.
The situation causes serious restrictions in the operation of supply chains: there are problems with the shipment of certain types of products to the market. Super Bock regrets the possible failures and inconvenience caused to customers and partners, the company said in a statement. |
It has not yet been specified how and when the attackers gained access to the IT infrastructure of the Super Bock Group. It is possible that the attack is related to the introduction of a ransomware program, but the company is silent about possible ransom requirements. Nothing is said about the timing of the recovery of the affected services.
Cybercriminals have been keeping the brewery in sight for some time: in March 2021, Molson Coors became a well-known victim of an attack that significantly complicated the production and shipment of products. That company's brands include Coors Lite, Peroni, Staropramen and Foster's. In addition, Lion, a brewer well known in Australia and New Zealand, was attacked by ransomware in 2020: this manufacturer was forced to temporarily close production and supplies, as it took serious efforts to restore computer infrastructure. Experts note that such incidents show the "catastrophic consequences" that such attacks can have for the drinks industry.[1]
