2025: Negotiations on joining Kazakhstan's project

In February 2025, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan commented on the possibility of joining the gas pipeline project Turkmenistan - - Afghanistan - Pakistan (India TAPI), the construction of which is "gaining momentum."

Negotiations are underway between the state gas company of Kazakhstan QazaqGaz and the state concern of Turkmenistan Turkmengaz (it owns 85% of the consortium of the pipeline company TAPI).

The total progress of TAPI by this time: out of 1814 km of pipe, only 214 km are available in Turkmenistan.

2024: Resumption of gas pipeline construction in Afghanistan

Until December 2024, more than 700 km of pipe in Afghanistan existed as a pure abstraction: the country's government has repeatedly declared its readiness to ensure the safety of construction, but the physical laying of the gas pipeline did not begin in any way. The case got off the ground at the end of 2024, now they are talking about the first six kilometers traveled.

However, another 800 km needs to be spent on the territory of Pakistan - also unstable.

Project shutdown after Taliban take power in Afghanistan

And then, with the coming to Taliban power Afghanistan of the Asian Development Bank, he withdrew from the project until the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is recognized. In the absence of an investor, the gas pipeline for a long time moved to the theoretical field.

2010: Official start of project for gas supply from Galkynash field in Turkmenistan to consumers in Pakistan and India

The idea of the TAPI gas pipeline goes back to the 1990s, and the project received an official start in 2010. Gas from the field in Galkynash in Turkmenistan was supposed to come to its large consumers - Pakistan and India, the planned capacity is 33 billion cubic meters per year. But there was a nuance: the pipe passed through the territory of Afghanistan, which was at war.
