2021: Creation of a unit in the US Navy

In mid-September 2021, the 5th Fleet of the US Navy as part of the Central Command created the Task Force 59 unit, focused on integrating artificial intelligence into unmanned systems used in the fleet

Task Force 59 will engage technical experts, along with external consultants from organizations such as the Joint Center for Artificial Intelligence (AI), to test new AI technologies and unmanned systems. Work will focus on integrating new AI technologies into unmanned systems in all areas, and not just into air systems under development.

The task force will focus on testing new technologies and integrating systems, and has a key role to play in the International Maritime Exercise (IMX), scheduled for early 2022.

The Navy has several units working on unmanned vessels that have successfully tested, and in March 2021 introduced a new unmanned campaign.

Its strategy aims to enable maritime operations using manned and unmanned systems operating side by side. The plan caused a mixed reaction in the US Congress, which ultimately will have to finance unmanned platforms.

One of the integration issues that the task force will address is the building of trust between operators and machines.

We are talking about establishing trust between a person and a car, "said Captain Michael Brasser, commander of the 59th task force.

According to Cooper, the 59th task force will be part of the Central Command, since it is a maritime center. There are also a number of problems in the area for testing equipment, including stormy seas, hostile adversaries and unpredictable weather. The concept is that if the US military can operate in this area, then they are most likely to be able to operate in other difficult currents on the planet.[1]
