Tula state university (TULGU) state university of the Central Russia. Actively reacting to time calls, the university dynamically develops, remaining faithful at the same time to classical traditions. At the university over 16000 students, over 440 graduate students, 11 doctoral candidates, over 110 interns and over 100 interns study. Among foreign pupils more than 700 citizens from 50 countries.

History
1992-1995
According to the level and a profile of educational, scientific and welfare activity in 1992 the institute the order of the Ministry of science, the higher school and technical policy of the Russian Federation No. 1119 of 12/7/92 was transformed to the Tula state technical university. In the conditions of transition to market economy, crisis of industrial production and reduction of demand of specialists, sharp reduction of science funding and education the university managed to save the best traditions and authority. These years tasks of attraction of extrabudgetary funds, preserving of schools of sciences and specialties, traditional for Tula, maintenance of the social sphere were set and solved. The emphasis on fundamentalization and humanitarization of preparation, training information technology implementation, development of scientific research, expansion of international relations was at the same time placed. Additional specialties in the social and economic, medical, humanitarian and natural-science directions open. In 1992 the university began preparation on a multistage education system: the incomplete highest – bachelors – specialists, masters. In 1995. The Tula state technical university was transformed by the order of the State Committee of the Russian Federation on the higher education No. 1036 of 7/11/95 to the Tula state university (TULGU).
1980-1991
In 1980 TPI was awarded the order the Labour Red Banner in connection with the 50 anniversary from the date of the basis and for progress in educational and scientific work. During this period the institute totaled about 15 thousand students studying on 32 specialties (generally technical), 33 doctors of science and 520 candidates of science. There were known schools of sciences, the academic and cultural traditions, rather powerful material resources were created. Level of works of TPI is highly appreciated within the state: the university is entrusted with the holding all-Union scientific and technical conferences; in 1982, 1984 and 1986 of TPI it is awarded with the passing banners in republican socialist competitions; to the best teachers honorary titles are given, the State awards, awards of Lenin Komsomol are awarded; developments of scientists and students are highly appreciated at all-Union and international exhibitions. Carrying out in 1991 in its walls of the first All-Russian meeting of rectors with participation of the Chairman of the Supreme Council of RSFSR B.N. Yeltsin became the certificate of an appreciation of work of TPI.
1963-1969
In 1963 the resolution of the Ministry of the higher and secondary vocational education of RSFSR of July 19, 1963 forms the Tula Polytechnical Institute (TPI) by a join path of TMI and Tula mining institute which was created in 1953 with two specialties and acceptance in 200 students for ensuring need of the coal basin Situated near Moscow for mining engineers. The Tula mountain technical school existing since 1943 also becomes a component of TPI. In university 9 faculties conducting preparation on 24 specialties are created. For an intensification of research works and providing more close connection of departments with the industry 10 industry research laboratories are created. Scientific capacity of university is increased, including the number of doctors of science increases that allowed to create in 1969 the first academic council on protection of doctoral dissertations; additional specialties open, academic buildings and hostels for students are built.
1962
In 1962 training of specialists for Bulgaria is begun.
1949-1958
In post-war years work on development of scientific research at institute began to yield results: doctoral dissertations (A.I. Lampsi, M.A. Mamontov) are defended, there take place protection of master's theses, the postgraduate study opens, in 1958 the academic councils on protection of master's theses are created. Since 1949 the specialty mining machines opens, and departments of a mountain profile are created. Later the specialties connected with development of the systems of weapon based on rocketry, requiring high qualification of teachers are created. In university the foundation of schools of sciences which results of activity will especially effectively be shown in the last decade of the XX century are laid.
1941-1943
In 1941 TMI located 25 departments where 11 associate professors, six of whom had an academic degree of the candidate of science, worked. In 10 pre-war years of existence by institute 703 engineers were trained. In the first days of war most of employees and students of TMI went on the front or to a national militia. In memory of those from them who died on fronts of the Great Patriotic War the memory Stele built to means of students and teachers was open on May 9, 1985. Due to the approach of the front since October 14 evacuation of institute to Izhevsk where he joins MSTU of N.E. Bauman which is earlier evacuated there begins (then the Moscow mechanical engineering institute). In March, 1942 the institute partially returns to Tula and since April 10 recommences lessons; in full the university got to work in 1943.
1930
Since October 1, 1930 at institute 240 students on four specialties – cold and hot processing of metals, instrumental production, machine-tool construction began to study. Training of specialists for the defense enterprises of Tula was conducted at 8 departments by forces of 35 teachers, without own academic buildings and hostels. In formation of educational process substantial assistance was provided by the Moscow universities, general-theoretical departments were headed by the Moscow scientists of professor V.I. Zhivago, I.V. Stankievich, L.B. Sokolov, F.K. Gerke, S.P. Finikov, V.N. Deputatov; seminars at departments some time were held by professor M.A. Lavrentyev, afterwards the vice president of Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and the academician P.P. Lazarev. On December 16, 1934 the first protection of degree projects of graduates of institute took place.
The first faculties – mechanical and special – appeared in 1937. In 1939 the first in institute master's thesis was defended by M.A. Mamontov.
