2025: $400 million loss recognition due to cyber attack

At the end of July 2025, it became known that the losses of the largest USA food supplier United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) as a result of a massive cyber attack amounted to from $350 million to $400 million. Due to the incident, the company had to disable some computer systems, which made it difficult to deliver goods to customers.

UNFI, based in Rhode Island, operates 53 distribution centers and supplies fresh and frozen food to more than 30,000 locations throughout the United States and Canada. Customers include supermarket chains, e-commerce market participants, natural products stores, independent retailers and catering establishments.

United Natural Foods, the largest food supplier in the United States, admitted losses of $400 million due to a cyber attack

Unauthorized activity in the UNFI IT infrastructure was detected in early June 2025. The company was forced to turn off a number of services, which provoked delays in the fulfillment of orders, and the shelves of individual outlets were empty. At the same time, UNFI notified law enforcement agencies about the incident, and also involved third-party forensic experts in the investigation.

The company promptly activated a response plan and took measures to minimize the consequences of a cyber attack, shutting down some systems in advance, which affected the ability to fulfill and distribute orders. Customers, suppliers and partners are our top priority. We are working closely with them to minimise potential disruption, "UNFI said.

It took several weeks to fully restore the affected services - they started working by the end of June 2025. UNFI does not disclose the nature of the attack or say whether the attackers stole any data from the company's network. No ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the hack.[1]
