2022: Ransomware Virus Attack

In early March 2022, auto parts manufacturer Denso attacked a ransomware virus, as a result of which 1.4 TB of commercial information was stolen from the company, including more than 157 thousand purchase orders, emails and sketches

According to an official statement from Denso, the company discovered unauthorized access using a ransomware virus in a separate division of Denso Automotive Deutschland GmbH, which is responsible for the sale and development of products in Germany. Denso spokeswoman Izumi Saito stressed that the company responded promptly. According to Saito, as of March 14, 2022, the attack did not critically affect the activities of the group of companies.

Hacker group Pandora, which allegedly gained access to Denso's systems, threatened to reveal the vendor's trade secrets, including emails, invoices and part diagrams on its website, which is located on the dark web. This was announced by the Japanese cybersecurity firm Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions, which is investigating the Denso hack and is exploring ways to bypass existing information protection.

Denso is the second largest supplier of automotive technology in the world after Robert Bosch, according to a ranking of the world's 100 largest parts manufacturers compiled by Automotive News for 2021. Although production at Denso Automotive Deutschland GmbH resumed a day later, this hacker attack was another blow for Toyota, trying to restore production lost in early March 2022 due to a lack of chips and failures, as well as the situation associated with restriction due to coronavirus infection (COVID-19). This incident was already the second cyber attack on Toyota supplier in 2022, the first occurred in February at Kojima Press Industry, then Toyota stopped all its factories in Japan for two weeks.[1]
