1.8 Zettabyte of data it will be created this year

The mankind will generate 1.8 Zettabyte of data within this year. The number of servers will grow ten times within the next decade. To earn, the companies should learn to analyze unimaginable information volumes.

Only in 2011 it will be created 1.8 Zettabyte [1] (or 1800 billion Gigabytes) data that is equivalent to 3 tweets a minute of the population of the USA within 26,976 years. And the number of servers in the world, managing directors of data warehouses, will grow ten times within the next decade. Some outputs of the fifth annual research IDC Digital Universe are like that.

IDC predicts that amount of data by 2020 will increase by 50 times that will be promoted substantially by the built-in systems of measurements, such as sensors in clothes, medical devices, engineering constructions, like buildings and bridges.

By research it is also established that unstructured information, like files, e-mail and video, will make 90% of all data created within the next decade.

Bad news, according to IDC, is that the number of the IT specialists capable to manage all this will grow up only by 1.5 times in comparison with present. The number of the people having skills and experience of management of fast-growing corporate storages just does not keep up with demand, IDC notes. In a research it is also emphasized that data protection will remain the main headache for managers of IT departments.

For example, though 75% of data are generated today by individuals, the enterprises will bear some responsibility for 80% of this information during some moments of her digital life. But less than one third of all stored data has the minimum security and only about a half of information which is subject to protection today are somehow protected, IDC notes.

There is also good news: thanks to new equipment rooms and software technologies, the cost of creation, collecting, management and information storage decreased to one sixth from that that was in 2005. For example, the exception of duplication and a data compression technology reduced the volume transferred on network and which is stored in DPC while virtualization and thin setup (selection of disk arrays of sufficient capacity for data storage) increased the efficiency of use of storage systems.

David Reinsel, the vice president of IDC for researches of storage systems and semiconductors, notes that in the industry huge work for cutting of costs for information storage is done. As a result, people and the organizations began to store more data.

Since 2005 annual investments of the enterprises into the equipment, the software and technologies of cloud services, along with training of personnel of data management, increased by 50% and reached $4 trillion.

New instruments of input, search and data analysis, in turn, automatically create data on information, the same as procedures of recognition of the person helping to appropriate tags to photos in Facebook. Information volume about data or metadata, grows twice quicker, than in general the digital Universe. According to the analyst, the gigabyte of the stored data can use as much how many and information petabyte. "Thus, 1.8 Zettabyte include also that we store also what we do not store. Think of it, looking video at YouTube or video of high definition through a cable or the satellite", - Reynsel told.

For example, during "consumption" of information by the user when watching the movie or video of YouTube, metadata which can not remain are created or stored only during several milliseconds.

Now only about 2% of the total costs of information technologies are the share of cloud computing. Nevertheless, by 2015 about 20% of all data will be somehow connected with cloud services, and 10% will be placed in cloud infrastructure, IDC states.

Reynselschitayet, that the ability of the companies to benefit by data arrays by means of the analysis of large volumes will be the next step. But if the company only stores more data, and search valuable in them will turn back failure, then there will be no return from investments into technologies of storage and management, he added.
