Product Data Management — a product data management system — the organizational and technical system providing management of all information on a product. In product quality different difficult technical objects can be considered (the ships and cars, airplanes and rockets, computer networks, etc.
DMs systems embrace in themselves: management of engineering data (engineering data management — EDM); management of documents; product information management (product information management — PIM); technical data management (technical data management — TDM); technical information management (technical information management — TIM); management of images and manipulation of information which is comprehensively defining a specific item.

Basic functionality of PDM systems covers the following main directions: management of data storage and documents; management of flows of works and processes; management of a product structure; automation of generation of selections and reports; authorization mechanism.

Using PDM systems tracking of data bulks and technical information, necessary at design stages, productions or constructions and also support of operation, maintenance and utilization of technical products is performed. Such data relating to one product and organized by a PDM system are called the digital model. PDM systems integrates information of any formats and types, providing it to users already in the structured type (at the same time structurization is tied to features of modern industrial production). PDM systems works not only with text documents, but also with the geometrical models and data necessary for functioning of automatic transfer lines, CNC machines and dr, and access to such data is provided directly from a PDM system.
