Population
Indigenous peoples are part of the Melanesian cultural group
Indigenous peoples inhabiting the islands of Melanesia are called Melanesians. It is a heterogeneous collection of different genetic groups and ethnic communities, different cultural practices (mythology, music, art, etc.) and various unrelated language families. Together, however, they form a vast area with a long history of interaction. The region covers populations that have a certain linguistic, biological and cultural proximity.
This region includes four independent countries:
- Fiji,
- Vanuatu,
- Solomon Islands,
- Papua New Guinea.
It also includes the Indonesian part of New Guinea and the Maluku Islands, the French overseas territory of New Caledonia, and the Torres Strait Islands.
At the same time, there is no consensus among anthropologists about the geographical boundaries of Melanesia. Many apply the term only to smaller islands, excluding New Guinea; Fiji was often seen as an anomalous border region, or even referred entirely to Polynesia; and Torres Strait Islanders were often simply classed as Aboriginal Australians.
The name Melanesia (in French Mélanésie) was first used in 1832 by the French navigator Jules Dumont-Durville: he coined the terms Melanesia and Micronesia along with pre-existing Polynesia to designate the three main ethnic and geographical regions forming the Pacific Ocean.
The name Melanesia (from ancient Greek: melas, letters. "Black" and ancient Greek: nesos, letters. "Island") etymologically means "islands of black [people]" in connection with the dark skin of the inhabitants.

The United States is increasing its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region in exchange for providing financial support to other countries. In December 2024, it became known that the deal between the States and Papua New Guinea, concluded in 2023, implies the payment of $864 million to the island state over ten years.
The treaty allows US authorities to deploy military personnel at six facilities in Papua New Guinea. The US Armed Forces can transit, refuel planes, repair equipment and train using them.
In addition, some facilities can be used exclusively by the US military. It is also envisaged to carry out their modernization - this is exactly what it is planned to spend most of the allocated money.
American military personnel have almost the same rights to use military facilities in the Philippines.

Crime
2024: Wave of looting over police strike
In January 2024, riots swept Papua New Guinea - residents began to smash shops and looting. Chinese business also came under attack - the Chinese Embassy in the capital of the country protested to the country's authorities and called on them to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens.
The main reason is the strike of the police - they took to the streets due to the fact that they were not paid a significant part of the salary. Accusations of accepting new taxes immediately fell on the country's government without the knowledge of citizens, but the authorities assure that technical problems in the system are to blame.
In the capital, Port Moresby, several arson attacks, robberies and acts of looting were recorded. Although the government says that this has not happened in the history of the capital, it should be understood that Papua New Guinea's crime rates have long gone beyond the norm - the state ranks second in the world in terms of the number of crimes committed, although there is no armed conflict in the country. One of the main reasons for this situation is the poverty of the population.
