2022: Sentence - 11 years in prison for online fraud

On November 7, 2022, the US Department of Justice announced that Nigerian blogger Ramon Olorunwa Abbas was sentenced to 135 months (more than 11 years) in federal prison. He was found guilty of fraud on the Internet and money laundering on a large scale.

Abbas, 40, also known by his nickname Ray Khushpuppi on Instagram (owned by Meta - recognized in Russia as an extremist organization) and other social networks, boasted about his wasteful lifestyle. For example, he published photos against the background of luxury cars and private aircraft. However, the income for all this was obtained fraudulently. Ramon Olorunwa Abbas has used a variety of cybercriminal schemes - from corporate email hacking to online bank robberies. In addition to stealing funds, the fraudster also assisted the North Korean regime.

Abbas conspired with 37-year-old Galeb Alaumary from Mississauga (Ontario, Canada) to launder money. Several cybershams carried out by them with major damage to the victims are given. So, in January 2019, fraudsters helped North Korean hackers withdraw banks Romania through Bulgaria about $14.7 million stolen from a bank in Malta. In May 2019, Abbas and Alomari conspired to launder £1 million stolen from a professional football club in the United Kingdom. In October 2019, a fraudster fraudulently convinced a New York law firm to transfer about $923 thousand to dollars an account that his accomplice controlled under a false name. Other schemes of deception worth hundreds of thousands of dollars have been proven.

By his own admission, in just 18 months, the defendant conspired to launder more than $300 million, the sentencing memorandum says.

In addition to serving his prison term, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas is obliged to pay compensation in the amount of $922,857 and $809,983 in favor of the aforementioned law firm and businessman from Qatar.^[1]
