2025: Recognition in cyber attacks on American companies
On November 11, 2025, SecPost reported that Russian citizen Aleksei Volkov pleaded guilty to aiding the Yanluowang cyber group, which distributes ransomware viruses. The man agreed to pay more than $9 million in damages to the victims of the attacks.
According to the American authorities, the 25-year-old Volkov acted as an intermediary: he penetrated the computer infrastructures of various organizations, after which he sold access to them to the Yanluowang ransomware group for a percentage of the ransom. The indictment lists at least eight victims, two of whom paid hackers a total of about $1.5 million to restore access to encrypted information. Volkov received more than $256 thousand from this amount.
It is alleged that Volkov collaborated with members of the Yanluowang group from July 2021 to November 2022. He participated in the organization of a number of attacks on institutions based in the United States. Among the victims were banks telecommunications companies and engineering firms in,,, Pennsylvania California Michigan Illinois, Georgia and Ohio.
FBI officers managed to gain access to the server on which the correspondence was stored between members of the Yanluowang group and the owner of the account under the name "chubaka.kor": it, as was later established, belonged to Volkov. During the investigation, it turned out that Volkov also communicated with members of the group engaged in the spread of the LockBit ransomware virus.
Volkov was arrested in Rome in 2023, after which he was extradited to the United States. He faces charges of computer hacking, stealing information and attempting to extort companies. For the crimes committed, the Russian faces a maximum punishment of 53 years in prison.[1]
