2020: Imprisonment for production of bitcoins on servers of Baidu
In the middle of March, 2020 it became known that the former IT specialist of Baidu of An Bang (An Bang) went to prison for production of bitcoins on servers of the company.
It is known that cryptocurrency mining includes the solution of difficult mathematical tasks which require huge computing powers and large volume of the electric power. Baidu has such capacities — the search system, largest in China. At the peak of popularity of cryptocurrencies in 2017 receiving only one bitcoin could bring to the user more than $19,000. Approximately at this time An Bang decided to become the miner for what used servers of the company.
According to the promulgated court document, An Bang was the senior engineer responsible for service of the search system Baidu. From April to July, 2018 it loaded scenarios of cryptomining on about 200 servers of Baidu into the period - it is the software which provides cryptocurrency mining for the website. On servers the Monero cryptocurrency which can be converted into bitcoins was mined. As a result of An Bang sold cryptocurrency approximately for 100,000 yuans ($14,300).
The Baidu company contacted police after noticed unusual activity on a large number of servers. Though trade in cryptocurrency in China is prohibited, at the end of 2019 the country decided not to prohibit its mining. However in February, 2020 Bang was sentenced by An to three years of imprisonment and fined 11,000 yuans ($1,570) for illegal use of others computer system.
It is not the first similar case when employees used access to infrastructure of the company free of charge to be engaged in cryptomining. Earlier in 2020 the Russian scientists from top secret nuclear laboratory were punished for similar crime.[1]
