2024: Victim of phone scammers

The court arrested four couriers on charges of embezzling about 50 million rubles from Moscow pensioners. The press service of the capital's prosecutor's office announced this on February 12, 2024.

According to the investigation, the attackers wrote to an 80-year-old pensioner in the messenger that his accounts were attacked by fraudsters, but intelligence officers allegedly stopped an attempt to transfer 700 thousand rubles. In order to ensure security, he was recommended to contact law enforcement agencies. The man believed the words of the swindlers and, together with his wife, transferred 49.9 million rubles to "special accounts" within a week. After some time, the victims realized that they had been deceived, and turned to the police.

According to TASS, the victim of fraud was a retired major general, a veteran of the USSR Armed Forces Anatoly Mirenkov and his wife. The scammers convinced them to transfer the money in order to allegedly prevent it from being debited for transfer to Ukraine. Mirenkov and his wife met with them several times to transfer money. Subsequently, the organizers of the fraud legalized some of the money obtained by criminal means, crediting it to cryptocurrency wallets and to the accounts of foreign banks.

As TASS specified in the Presnensky court, the theft was committed using calls through the Telegram messenger. Each of the accused was chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention for 1 month and 28 days, until April 5, 2024.
