2021:5 years in prison for tax fraud and cyber attacks
A court in the Eastern District of New York sentenced Anton Bogdanov to five years in prison for tax fraud and hacking. Also, the 35-year-old Russian will have to pay a fine of $476 thousand. This was announced on May 20, 2021 by the US Department of Justice.
The court found that Anton Bogdanov from 2014 to 2016. together with accomplices hacked the computer systems of private companies to prepare tax reports, stole personal information of customers (social security numbers, dates of their birth, etc.) and with its help received a refund of tax overpayments.
Changing information in tax returns, hackers sought to transfer a tax deduction to their accounts, the Ministry of Justice said. The damage from their actions is estimated at more than $1.5 million.
Bogdanov used technically sophisticated means to steal two important assets - personal information and funds owned by American taxpayers - the words of a representative of the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS, Internal Revenue Service, tax office) are quoted in the message. |
The state prosecution asked to sentence the Russian to imprisonment for a term of 7.2 to 9 years. According to prosecutors, such a sentence "will be a convincing signal that this type of criminal behavior will be punished with a significant term of imprisonment," and will also deter the defendant himself from illegal behavior in the future.
The verdict shows the agency's commitment to protecting information about tax returns and to holding hackers accountable for their crimes, said prosecutor Mark Lesko.[1] |
