Biography

Babariko Viktor Dmitrievich was born on November 9, 1963 in Minsk. He graduated from Belarusian State University in 1988, in 1995 - the Academy of Management under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, then, five years later - the magistracy of the Belarusian State University.

He has been working in the country's banking system since July 1995. He was appointed Chairman of the Board of Belgazprombank OJSC in July 2000.

On May 12, 2020, the bank announced that Babariko had resigned from the board and resigned from the post of chairman of the board of his own free will. Viktor Babariko announced his candidacy for the presidential election in Belarus. He wrote about this on his Facebook page.

2020: Detention

Viktor Babariko was Lukashenko's competitor in the 2020 presidential election in Belarus. In June 2020, employees of the State Control Committee (KGK) came to the Minsk office of Belgazprombank (a subsidiary of Gazprombank), of which Babariko has been chairman since 2000. 14 years in prison for bribery and money laundering

On July 6, 2021, the Supreme Court of Belarus sentenced Viktor Babariko to 14 years in prison. The ex-head of Belgazprombank was found guilty of receiving especially large bribes and money laundering. The former banker himself did not admit his guilt.

According to the investigation, Babariko, together with other defendants, accepted funds from the accounts of Belarusian economic entities in the form of cashless transfers "under the guise of participating in the distribution of profits" to "accounts controlled by the head of an organized criminal group" of foreign companies registered in Latvia.

Victor Babariko, who was running for the presidential election, linked his arrest to this. According to him, when suppressing opposition protests after the presidential election, the leadership of Belarus "saved their own power from people who wanted to change life for the better."^[1]
