2024: Sentence - 9 years in prison for sending photographs of drawings of military equipment to Ukraine
On August 8, 2024, the Moscow Regional Court sentenced Mikhail Baranov, former quality director of the Lukhovitsky Aviation Plant, to nine years in prison in a maximum security colony. Baranov was found guilty of treason for transmitting classified data on military aviation equipment to Ukraine.
According to Mediazona, in addition to the charge of high treason, Baranov was found guilty of creating a criminal community, theft on an especially large scale and attempted smuggling of weapons. The court also satisfied the claim of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) against Baranov in the amount of about ₽5 million.
Baranov was arrested in September 2022 at the request of the FSB in Moscow and the Moscow region. At the time of his arrest, he no longer worked at the Lukhovitsky Aviation Plant, which is a branch of the MiG aircraft-building corporation and is engaged in the production of combat aircraft, including MiG, Il-114-300 and Tu-160M. According to investigators, Baranov, having access to classified technical documentation, photographed drawings of parts of military aviation equipment and sent them to an employee of the Odessa Aviation Plant.
The special services reported that Baranov tried to transfer information constituting a state secret to a foreign state, which became the basis for initiating a criminal case on treason. A video recording of Baranov's arrest, published by the FSB, confirmed his involvement in the case.
The investigation began after the FSB revealed the theft of spare parts for aircraft at the Lukhovitsky aircraft plant. According to investigators, Baranov and his accomplices were engaged in theft of parts, which were then transported to Ukraine.
It is known that before working at the Lukhovitsky aircraft plant, Baranov served as a leading specialist in the 353rd military mission of the Ministry of Defense, and also worked in the MiG aircraft building corporation.[1]
