2023: Sentence - two years in prison for attacks on the websites of banks, fuel and energy complex and telecom companies
On July 4, 2023, the Zheleznodorozhny District Court of Rostov-on-Don sentenced Russian Ivan Bayandin to two years in prison for hacker attacks on the critical information infrastructure of the Russian Federation (KII).
According to the case file, Bayandin, having special knowledge in the field of information technology, found a certain Internet resource designed to block the activities of the sites of various companies and organizations. He carried out attacks on Russian structures in the banking sector and in the field of the fuel and energy complex. In addition, Bayandin tried to disrupt the work of telecommunications companies.
According to the published message, Bayandin's motive for carrying out hacker attacks was his negative attitude towards the current geopolitical situation. The court notes that Bayandin was aware of the principle of operation of the specified Internet resource and purposefully used it to disrupt the functioning of the IT systems of KII facilities. About what damage the attacked organizations could suffer, nothing is reported in the materials of the Zheleznodorozhny District Court of Rostov-on-Don.
The attacker was found guilty of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 274.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - the use of a computer program and other computer information, knowingly intended for unlawful influence on the critical information infrastructure of the Russian Federation, including to block the information contained in it. At the hearing, Bayandin pleaded guilty to committing the crime in full. In addition to serving two years in a penal colony, he will have to pay a fine of 500 thousand rubles. At the same time, as of July 7, 2023, the court verdict did not enter into legal force.[1]
