Biography

2023: Guatemala's presidential election win

On August 20, 2023, Bernardo Arevalo, a representative of the center-left Semilla movement, won the second round of presidential elections in Guatemala. The inauguration will take place on January 14, 2024.

It is reported that after processing 100% of the protocols, Arevalo received approximately 58% of the vote. His main rival - National Unity of Hope (ENE) candidate Sandra Torres - won roughly 37% of the vote. Guatemala's incumbent President Alejandro Giammattei congratulated Arevalo on his victory and suggested he begin an "orderly transition" after the results become official. In addition, the elected leader received congratulations from the heads of Mexico and El Salvador, as well as from the government of Taiwan. After the announcement of Arevalo's victory, numerous supporters of the Seed movement took to the streets of Guatemala's cities.

It is noted that Arevalo won the presidential election at an extremely difficult time for Guatemala. The country is rocked by food problems and violence, causing new waves of migration. As of August 2023, Guatemalans make up the bulk of Central Americans seeking to enter the U.S. in search of a better life.

Bernardo Arevalo, 64, is the son of Juan José Arevalo, who led Guatemala from 1945-1951. In 2015, Bernardo Arevalo took part in Guatemalan protests demanding the resignation of then-President Otto Perez Molina. The president-elect's campaign has focused on fighting state corruption and security issues in Guatemala, as well as creating jobs and promoting climate change policies.
