Biography

2018: A fine of $66 million for theft of commercial secrets of Lumileds

On August 10, 2018 the Lumileds company which separated from Philips which headquarters is in San Jose the State of California, seized from the former employee $66 million for theft of commercial secrets. So much the Chinese company Elec-Tech International had to spend for development of production technologies of the LED lamps of the increased brightness which are used in lamps, automobile headlights and for the general lighting.

Stole commercial secrets, and then Chen Gangyi who was earlier working for Lumileds within seven years joined Elec-Tech International company as the vice president. According to the investigation, the Chinese secretly transferred thousands of confidential files. Elec-Tech International said that the company did not steal commercial secrets of Lumileds and independently developed the production technology of new LED lamps.

In particular, the engineer stole at Lumileds computer instructions for programming of the reactors used for production of semiconductor chips which are applied in development of energy efficient LED lamps.

The CEO of Elec-Tech International who appeared before the court too was also involved in theft of data. The investigation proved that he listed Chen Ganyi a payment for unknown services in four months before that left work in Lumileds and returned to China.

On judge the interests of Lumileds the senior vice president and the main thing the legal advisor of Cheree McAlpine company and external consultant Bryan Brian Roche, the representative of partner company Reed Smith represented.

The shire Makalpin expressed gratitude to jury trial which protected the rights of Lumileds company to intellectual property, and the chief executive officer of Lumileds Mark Adams noted that the company which is investing heavily in the innovative developments will continue work with law enforcement agencies.[1]
