Claudia Sheinbaum won a landslide victory in the Mexican presidential election held on June 2, 2024, becoming the first woman elected head of state in the country's history.
According to an exit poll conducted by the national electoral office, Sheinbaum received support from 58.3% to 60.7% of voters, a record figure for the entire period of democratic development of Mexico.
We are lucky to live in a stellar moment in the history of our country, as well as our Latin America and the world. Claudia Sheinbaum will become the first woman president in our history! - wrote the politician on his page on the social network H. |
According to the agency, Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City and a protege of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has a number of difficult tasks to solve. Among them are the fight against crime, attracting investment, reforming the state oil company Pemex, as well as negotiations with the United States on migration and security issues. During the election campaign, Sheinbaum promised to continue many of the social initiatives of the previous president, Lopez Obrador, aimed at supporting the poor, while guaranteeing the financial responsibility of the government and respect for the independence of the central bank.
Reuters notes that Sheinbaum's electoral success was the culmination of a long process of female empowerment in Mexico. As the 87-year-old supporter of the new president, Edelmira Montiel, emphasized: "In the past, we did not even have the right to vote, and when we received it, we voted the way our husband advised. Thank God, times have changed, and I have lived to this moment[1]
