2022: Confession of embezzlement of bitcoins worth 187.4 million rubles from the hacker under investigation

As it became known on September 12, 2022, a former employee of the FSB Directorate for the Samara Region, Dmitry Demin, pleaded guilty to stealing bitcoins worth 187.4 million rubles from a hacker under investigation from Syzran. The officer, accused of large-scale fraud, entered into a pre-trial agreement with the military prosecutor's office and offered to testify against accomplices.

Despite this, according to Kommersant, the garrison military court in Moscow did not release Demin under house arrest. He was extended the term of detention in the pre-trial detention center until December 1, 2022.

Building of the FSB of the Samara region

The basis for the extension of the term was fears that under house arrest Dmitry Demin would enter into collusion with accomplices and continue to engage in criminal activities. According to Demin himself, since April he has not worked for the FSB, and "he is not going to flee from his three children who are waiting for him in the Samara region."

As reported in June 2022 TASS , citing a law enforcement source, in 2021, Demin participated in an operation to detain hackers in the Syzran district of the Samara region. During the operation, A.O. Mochalov was detained, who was suspected of hacking the protection of other people's computers with the help of a special program and stealing passwords from electronic wallets.

After the arrest, the hacker provided the FSB officers with passwords from the program and explained how it works, the newspaper said. With its help, an officer with accomplices was able to steal 68.5 bitcoins. A criminal case against Demin and other unidentified participants in the theft was opened in early 2022 under Part 4 of Art. 159 (fraud on an especially large scale).

According to Kommersant, citing the materials of the criminal case, the crime was committed by the Chekist using his official position "by deception and abuse of trust, causing significant damage" to citizen Mochalov.^[1]
