2024: Sentence - 3 years in prison for sharing pornographic photos on WhatsApp

On July 18, 2024, it became known that the Zyuzinsky court of Moscow sentenced Archpriest Dmitry Kuvyrtalov, rector of the Church of the Archangel Michael in Letov, to three years in prison. The priest is accused of exchanging pornographic materials in the WhatsApp messenger.

According to reports, in TASS March 2023 Ministry of Defence Russia , the archpriest was sent to the zone of a special operation to feed the personnel. On the line of combat contact, the guard examined the electronic gadgets left by the rector at the headquarters location: correspondence with pornographic images was found on the smartphone. The priest was detained and placed in the commandant's office Luganskaya of the region, where he was for two weeks.

A subsequent check revealed in the archpriest's phone three private correspondence in WhatsApp, in which the interlocutors sent each other pornographic photos. Moreover, one of the participants in the correspondence was a 15-year-old girl - she, allegedly, sent her images for money. As a result, a criminal case was initiated against the priest under paragraph "b" of Part 3 of Art. 242 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (distribution of pornographic materials using the Internet).

The prosecutor requested a sentence of eight years in prison for the archpriest. However, the sentence turned out to be milder - three years in a general regime colony. It is emphasized that imprisonment was imposed precisely for sending pornographic messages in individual personal correspondence. The convict's lawyer Denis Baluev states that the verdict creates "a precedent when sending and receiving images in the messenger by mutual consent of subscribers is qualified as a serious crime, for which a real prison term has been imposed." The priest was taken into custody in the courtroom. The defense intends to appeal the verdict.[1]
