History

2022: The son of a dictator who was deposed 36 years ago was elected President of the Philippines

At the end of May 2022, the son of the former dictator and his full namesake Ferdinand Marcos was elected the new president of the Philippines, he won 31.6 million or 58.77% of the vote with a turnout of 82%. He defeated rival Leni Robredo and became the first candidate in recent history to receive an absolute majority of votes in the country's presidential election.

The proclamation formalized an unthinkable return to power of the country's most famous political dynasty after a popular power uprising sent the Marcos family into exile in Hawaii in 1986, which ended the 20-year authoritarian rule of Father Ferdinand Marcos. President Marcos Sr. was accused of brutal authoritarian rule, widespread corruption and the murder of dissenters. However, Marcos Jr. returned to the Philippines in 1991 and was a member of the Philippine Congress for many years.

64-year-old Ferdinand Marcos Jr., better known as Bongbong, will replace Rodrigo Duterte on June 30, 2022 and will hold the presidency of the Philippines until 2028, and the daughter of the current president Sarah Duterte-Carpio will become his vice president.

There are thousands of you, volunteers, parallel groups, political leaders who threw their lot with us because of our faith in our message of unity! Thank you very much to Sarah Duterte-Carpio for your personal firm commitment. According to the Deputy Minister of the Philippine Congress, the voting process abroad was held in a calm atmosphere. I beg you all, pray for me, wish me well! I want to do everything possible for this country!, - the president of Philippines Ferdinand Marcos (Ferdinand Marcos) told.

By the end of May 2022, Marcos is still assembling his cabinet, which has to cope with high inflation, government debt and a complex foreign policy balance with an ally of the United States and an increasingly influential China. Despite the victory, according to CNN, Marcos's rule will be divisive, as opponents and victims of persecution are widely outraged by what they consider historical revisionism in order to clear the name of the family.
