2024: Abandoning human music in favor of AI-generated works

In late September 2024, Indian film director Ram Gopal Varma revealed that he had abandoned human musicians in favor of AI and plans to use only AI-generated melodies in future projects.

The film director and screenwriter, known for such popular Bollywood films as "Company," "Rangila," "Sarkar" and "Satya," has launched a project called RGV Den Music, which will only represent music created through AI applications including Suno and Udio.

Varma said he would use AI-generated music in all of his projects, including feature films. All the music in his new film Sari is already AI-generated. In an interview, Varma urged artists to embrace AI rather than resist it.

In the end, music is born out of your thoughts. You need to be clear about what you want from an AI app. Your taste is important.

AI continues to infiltrate creative industries, sparking both excitement about new opportunities and potential job losses. Many high-profile filmmakers, including Academy Award winner Christopher Nolan, have warned against over-reliance on AI. Nolan believes AI is incapable of replacing human intuition in artistic creativity.

Varma criticizes composers for frequent deadlines and scheduling conflicts, while accusing songwriters of failing to capture the essence of the idea. He argued that the human factor often interferes with the creative process, making making music both time-consuming and expensive. AI, on the other hand, provides the result instantly and practically "at zero cost." At the same time, Varma collaborates with startups Reclaim Protocol and Story Protocol to protect the intellectual property of their songs created using AI.[1]
