2025: Sentence - 15 years in a maximum security colony for treason

On August 26, 2025, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation announced that the Moscow City Court had sentenced programmer Sergei Irina, a former Yandex employee. He received 15 years in prison for treason.

The case file says that in February 2022, Irin transferred $500 to the account of the fund, which collects funds for the purchase of weapons, ammunition, uniforms and equipment for units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). The verdict was passed under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (high treason, that is, the provision of financial assistance to a foreign state in activities directed against the security of Russia by a citizen of the Russian Federation).

Irin will serve his sentence in a maximum security colony. He was also fined 5 million rubles. According to TASS, during the sentencing, the defendant showed a poster of anti-government content. The state prosecution asked to sentence Irina to 17 years in prison. The state prosecution in the criminal case was supported by a representative of the General Prosecutor's Office of Russia.

Agreeing with the position of the state prosecutor, the court found Irina guilty of the charged crimes. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison with the first 3 years in prison, and the remaining term in a maximum security penal colony, with a fine of more than 5 million rubles, with a restriction of freedom for a period of 1 year 6 months, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation said.

TASS, referring to the materials of the investigation, reports that on February 27, 2022, Irin transferred $500 to the account of the Ukrainian fund for assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine "Come back alive" (recognized in the Russian Federation as an undesirable organization). In April 2024, he was detained and detained by the Lefortovo Court of Moscow.^[1]
