2025: Loss of ₽1,2 million due to fraudsters
19-year-old Russian skier Platon Islamshin became a victim of telephone scammers who, posing as representatives of the Russian Ski Federation and the FSB, stole ₽1,2 million from the athlete. This became known on January 27, 2025.
According to the Telegram channel Mash, the incident occurred during the athlete's stay in Moscow, where he came from the Sverdlovsk region to treat an injury sustained in early January at the IV Russian-Chinese Youth Winter Games - 2025.
The scammers called Islamshin, introducing themselves as a high-ranking representative of skiing, and announced an inspection to identify foreign agents. They warned the athlete about the upcoming call from the FSB officer.
During the next call, the attacker, who introduced himself as an FSB officer, announced an allegedly recorded transfer on behalf of the athlete in favor of the Russian Volunteer Corps (the organization was recognized as terrorist in Russia, activities are prohibited).
Under the pretext of ensuring the security of funds, fraudsters convinced the athlete to transfer ₽1,2 million to allegedly protected accounts. After that, they tried to persuade him to issue a loan for additional transfers, which made Islamshin suspect deception.
This case is not an isolated example of telephone fraud. The police note an increase in the number of such crimes using social engineering methods, when attackers appear to be employees of various state bodies.
Law enforcement agencies recommend to be vigilant when receiving calls from unknown persons posing as employees of government agencies, and not to perform financial transactions at their request without first checking information through official channels.[1]
