2022: Sentence - 20 years in prison for trying to sell nuclear submarine secrets
On November 9, 2022, the US Department of Justice announced the appointment of prison terms for a Maryland man and his wife for conspiring to illegally distribute classified data related to the design of warships with nuclear power plants.
The case involves 44-year-old Jonathan Toebbe and 46-year-old Diana Toebbe. According to court documents, at the time of his arrest, the man was an employee of the Department of the Navy, where he served as a nuclear engineer. In particular, he participated in the Offshore Nuclear Installations Program. The defendant had access to classified data that related to the development, production or use of nuclear weapons, as well as the production of special materials for nuclear reactors, for example, for submarines. In addition, he worked with information related to naval nuclear propulsion systems, including information on critical structural elements.
Jonathan Többe tried to sell the data obtained at the place of work to a certain person posing as a representative of a foreign government. The secret shopper was actually an undercover agent FBI. For SD cards with closed information, the spy received a total of $100 thousand in cryptocurrency. Diana Többe, who played the role of an observer, was involved in the case. Now the man will have to serve a prison sentence of 232 months (more than 19 years), and his wife - 262 months (more than 21 years).
The couple conspired to sell classified defense information that would endanger the lives of our men and women in uniform and the security of the United States, "said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Department of Justice's National Security Division.[1] |
