2019: A fine of $5.8 million for installation of unnecessary stents
At the beginning of June, 2019 the American cardiologist, doctor Joseph Galichiya undertook to pay $5.8 million as a penalty for holding unnecessary procedures of stenting. Besides, the court imposed three-year ban on participation of this cardiologist in any federal programs of health care.
Accomplishment of procedures, unnecessary from the medical point of view, puts patients at unreasonable risk and spends means of federal programs. Galichiya denied all charges therefore legal procedure lasted for seven years. However Galichiya not the first time is brought to judicial responsibility because of problems with drawing of accounts to insurance companies. In 2000 his Galichia Medical Group (GMED) company paid a penalty in the amount of $1.5 million for presentation of insurance accounts on services which were not provided or were not issued properly. In 2009 the company paid $1.3 million for repeated presentation of insurance accounts for the same services and drawing of accounts on not provided services.
According to charge, Galichiya and GMED consciously submitted false accounts from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2014 for surgical procedures, unreasonable from the medical point of view, during which Galichiya implanted to patients coronary stents. According to the conclusion the vessels Galichiya it is excluded from participation in the programs Medicare, Medicaid and other federal programs of medical insurance, the special responsible agent from office of the General inspector of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported.
The claim against Galichiya and his company was submitted by doctor Aly Gadalla within the federal law on counterfeited requirements. This law allows the state to interfere with legal procedure and to take certain measures, as well as occurred in this case.[1]
