Biography

Karapetyan Karen Wilhelmovich - born August 14, 1963 in Stepanakert (NKAO, Azerbaijan SSR, USSR).

1970-1980 - studied at secondary school No. 128 named after L. Tolstoy Yerevan.

1980-1985 - graduated with honors from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics of Yerevan State University.

1985-1996 - worked at the computing center of the State Planning Commission of the Republic of Armenia, as well as at the Association of Figures of Science and Culture and taught at YSU.

1989 - awarded the degree of candidate of economic sciences.

1996-1998 - Deputy General Director of Armenergo. 1998-2001 - General Director of Armenergo CJSC.

2001-2010 - General Director of ArmRosgazprom CJSC.

2010 - received a doctorate in economics.

2010: Mayor of Yerevan

December 17, 2010 - October 28, 2011 - Mayor of Yerevan. Since 2009, the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) nominated him as a member of the Yerevan Council of Elders. In the election of the city mayor of 17.12.2010, 51 out of 65 votes were cast for Karapetyan at the Council of Elders.

In early 2011, street trading was banned by the mayor. Merchants had to move to the markets. This decision was explained by the intention to streamline urban trade activities, but as a result, people trading on the streets went to protest actions. 26.01.11 a crowd of street vendors gathered near the city hall demanding the resignation of the mayor. 3.03.2011. Protesters came to the building of the republican government under the leadership of deputies representing the parliamentary faction "Heritage." The protest led to clashes between protesters and the police. The protest of the protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the city administration related to bans on street trade, which deprived many people of their earnings.

In the summer of 2011, performing a program to improve the city transport system, the city hall doubled the cost of metro tickets since July. As Karapetyan explained, the former tariff was provided by subsidies from the administration's treasury, but such an opportunity ended, since the city hall lacks financial resources for this.

2011: Vice President of Gazprom

2016-2018: Prime Minister of Armenia

President Armenia Serzh Sargsyan put forward a proposal to appoint Karen Karapetyan as Prime Minister of the Republic. The ruling republican party approved this candidacy and on September 13, 2016 Karen Karapetyan was appointed to the post of Prime Minister of Armenia.

On April 9, 2018, by decree of the President of Armenia Armen Sargsyan, he was dismissed. He continued to serve as and. about. Prime Minister until the election of a new head of government on April 17, 2018.

On April 23, 2018, after Sargsyan resigned due to protests, according to the law "On the Structure and Activities of the Government of the Republic of Armenia," Karapetyan became the acting Prime Minister of Armenia.

On May 8, 2018, Karen Karapetyan congratulated the new Prime Minister and resigned.

Scientific activity

The author of 32 scientific papers. He defended his thesis on economics on the topic "Imitation system for predicting macroeconomic indicators of the Union Republic" (1989, YSU).

Awards

In 2006, by decree of the President of Armenia, he was awarded the Anania Shirakatsi Medal.
