2024: Detention in Merlion management extortion case

On February 28, 2024, a former FSB officer Anton Kaurov was detained in the case of extortion from the Merlion leadership. RBC writes about this with reference to people familiar with the investigation.

According to one of the interlocutors of the publication, Anton Kaurov worked in the "M" department of the FSB, which oversaw the work of courts and law enforcement agencies. By February 28, 2024, the detainee is being interrogated by investigators. The defendants in the case testified against Kaurov.

According to RBC, Anton Kaurov is involved in a case in which several FSB and Investigative Committee officers suspected of extorting 5 billion rubles from the Merlion leadership were previously detained. According to the investigation, a criminal community was operating against the owners of Merlion, organized by businessman Vitaly Kachur and his son Kirill. Among other members of the criminal organization, law enforcement agencies call the investigator of the Investigative Directorate for the North-West Administrative District of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in Moscow Alexei Nesnov, the ex-general director of Merlion Vyacheslav Simonenko, the senior inspector of the 8th personnel department of the Investigative Committee Alexander Kireev and "other persons." What role the detainee Anton Kaurov played in this criminal community is not reported in the publication.

As noted by CNews, a certain Anton Kaurov is mentioned in several articles published on the Internet. One of them dates back to October 2018, it mentions a certain FSB officer Anton Kaurov, who, on October 20, 2015, together with another FSB employee Roman Matveyev, beat a Moscow Region lawyer Sergei Budko. The latter was suspected of taking a bribe during the trial to protect the criminal accused of extortion.[1]
