2021: Detention for repost on social network about action in support of Navalny

On April 21, 2021, the police detained the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), deputy director of the Institute of Applied Physics Efim Khazanov. According to him, the detention is associated with a repost on social networks about an action in support of Alexei Navalny.

The scientist said that a protocol was drawn up in relation to him under Part 2 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Code (organizing or holding a public event without submitting a notice in the prescribed manner). This article provides for a punishment in the form of a fine from 20,000 to 30,000 rubles, or compulsory work up to 50 hours, or administrative arrest up to 10 days.

A few days before the arrest, Khazanov reposted a number of entries about Alexei Navalny, follows from the scientist's profile on Facebook. He himself wrote almost nothing, only once commented on the news of the hunger strike by the survivors of Beslan in support of Navalny.

On the morning of April 21, 2021, Efim Khazanov of the police department of the Kanavinsky district of Nizhny Novgorod, and a few hours later he was released under an obligation to appear in court.

Khazanov is a specialist in the field of laser physics and nonlinear optics, as well as an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is also a laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation. Interfax notes that the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences was first detained for reposts on the social network.

According to Khazanov, in addition to him, four more people were detained, including Nizhny Novgorod human rights activist Stanislav Dmitrievsky.

The General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Sciences stood up for the detained academician and announced its readiness to appeal to high authorities in connection with the detention.

If you need to appeal to high authorities, law enforcement and so on, this will definitely be done. We will formalize this either by my letter or by decision of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, when the situation is clear, "said RAS President Alexander Sergeev at a meeting of the general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
