2024: Arrest in embezzlement case

On September 25, 2024, the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow, at the request of the Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, arrested the former mayor of Sochi, Alexei Kopaygorodsky. He is suspected of particularly large embezzlement.

Kopaygorodsky was the mayor of Sochi from September 2019 to May 2024. After his resignation, he went to serve in one of the volunteer battalions in the special military operation zone. According to Gazeta.Ru, Kopaygorodsky is suspected of several fraudulent schemes at once, including the sale of places in the cemetery and money laundering through government contracts. Police investigators, together with operatives, conducted searches in Moscow and Sochi at the place of residence of the former mayor and his relatives. Searches in the framework of the case against Kopaygorodsky were also carried out at the head of the Khostinsky district of Sochi Ivan Savin, one of the former deputy mayors Oleg Burlev and the former director of the department of architecture and urban planning of the city administration Dmitry Litvinets.

Kopaygorodsky was charged under Part 4 of Art. 160 of the Criminal Code - misappropriation or embezzlement on an especially large scale. Under this article, he faces a sentence of imprisonment for up to ten years. In the case, according to TASS, the theft of two land plots for a total of 3.7 million rubles appears. Kopaigorodsky does not admit guilt in the crime. In court, he asked to be sent back to the front.
