2022: Obstetrician-gynecologist from Bratsk received 3 years in prison due to the death of a newborn

On March 4, 2022, the Bratsk City Court of the Irkutsk Region sentenced the obstetrician-gynecologist of the city perinatal center Tatyana Kuzmenko to three years in prison due to the death of a newborn. She was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm by negligence and causing death due to improper performance of professional duties.

In the spring of 2020, a newborn girl died in the Bratsk perinatal center as a result of severe childbirth. She was diagnosed with irreversible lesions of the central nervous system resulting from asphyxia. And the mother of the child, Julia Bogdanova, survived clinical death and now will not be able to have children.

According to investigators, the doctor of the perinatal center was mistaken when using epidural anesthesia. In addition, she applied the prohibited method of squeezing a child (Christeller's method, banned in Russia and Europe), as a result, the full-term girl received asphyxiation and ended up in intensive care, where she died 40 days later.

According to the victim, despite the official suspension from official duties during the investigation, the obstetrician continued to work in a medical institution.

In addition to three years in prison, the court forbade Tatyana Kuzmenko to engage in medical activities for 2.5 years.[1]
