2019: An appeal not to use social networks

At the beginning of July, 2019 one of founders of the online encyclopedia "Wikipedia" Larry Senger urged people to boycott social networks within 48 hours to force their owners to return control over personal data to users. In the appeal doctor Senger said that the strike — — will show from July 4 to July 5 "mass demand" for changes.

The declaration calls for decentralization of social networks and their transformation into systems which respect the rights to freedom of speech, personal privacy and security. Besides, Senger hopes that networks will become more open and compatible, and messages from one service could be displayed in others.

We are going to strain our collective muscles and to demand from corporations manipulators to return us control over our data, confidentiality and the user interface.

According to doctor Senger, the more people will join an action, the better they will show discontent with a present situation. They need also to sign the Declaration on digital independence prepared by Senger. Data on boycott widely dispersed in Reddit, Twitter and several other networks. Doctor Senger asked supporters to distribute information and in Facebook as it is not registered in this network.

Despite the growing interest in a strike, many call in question its influence. In Hacker News one of commentators said that boycott will not strongly affect the number of visitors of social networks, and the difference, most likely, will appear in error limits. According to experts, dissatisfied with the policy of social networks already stopped their use or minimized it.[1]
