2023: Arrest on charges of selling dummy implants to treat pain

On March 9, 2023, the US Department of Justice announced the arrest of Laura Perryman, the former CEO of the medical company Stimwave. She is accused of selling sham implants to treat chronic pain.

We are talking about the StimQ PNS device. It is intended for stimulation of peripheral nerves by means of electric impulses. At its launch in 2017, the system contained three key components: an implantable electrode array, an external battery for wireless energy transmission, and an implantable energy receiver in the form of a 23 cm catheter.

The system was sold at a price of approximately $16 thousand. However, shortly after StimQ PNS went on sale from doctors, complaints began to come to Stimwave that due to too long a catheter, a number of patients had problems with implantation. It is impossible to shorten this element without violating its functionality. Then Stimwave, by order of Perryman, released an alternative fictitious catheter, which doctors could shorten at their discretion. But this component was made entirely of plastic and did not serve any medical purpose. In other words, Stimwave misled both doctors and patients who paid a lot of money for the procedure.

Perryman reportedly faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and felony fraud. health care On the first count, she faces imprisonment for up to 20 years, on the second - up to 10 years. Stimwave itself admitted the creation of a fictitious medical device and agreed to pay a fine of $10 million as part of a non-prosecution agreement.[1]
