2024: Appointment as AI Director at the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency

In early August 2024, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency (CISA) announced the appointment of its first director of artificial intelligence. These duties are assigned to Lisa Einstein, who previously served as executive director of the agency's Cybersecurity Advisory Committee and senior CISA adviser on AI.

Einstein is a part-time scientific consultant at Stanford's Intelligent Systems Laboratory. She became the first holder of a dual master's degree from Stanford in computer science and international politics. Einstein led the research team of Lieutenant General (retired) Herbert McMaster on new technologies and geopolitics, and also conducted research in the field of AI, including the joint development of the first speech recognition models for three West African languages spoken by 10 million people in seven countries. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Guinea, Lisa taught physics to more than 600 students in rural areas.

In the new position, Einstein will lead CISA's efforts to responsibly implement artificial intelligence tools that can help implement the agency's mission. In addition, it will help in identifying and mitigating risks to critical U.S. infrastructure related to AI. As AI capabilities continue to evolve, posing a certain threat to the digital ecosystem, CISA has focused on increasing security awareness in AI development and deployment.

I am deeply concerned about CISA's mission - if we succeed, the critical systems Americans rely on every day will become safer, more reliable and more effective, "Einstein said, commenting on her new appointment[1]
