Biography
Alexey Borisovich Lyubimov (born September 16, 1944, Moscow) is a Russian pianist, harpsichordist, organist, conductor, teacher. Honored Artist of Russia (1997), People's Artist of Russia (2003). Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Historical and Modern Performing Arts of the Moscow State Conservatory.
He began concert activity in 1968, since 1975 - soloist of the Moscow State Academic Philharmonic. Performer of an unusually wide range - from English Virginalists and French court music of the 18th century through European romantics to modern "post music." Together with B. Berman, T. Grindenko, M. Pekarsky Lyubimov was engaged in electronic music, played in an experimental rock band.
Creator and leader of a number of chamber ensembles:
- "Music - XX century" (1968 - 1975 ),
- "Moscow Baroque Quartet" (1975 - 1982 ),
- "Academy of Ancient Music" (since 1982, together with T. Grindenko).
In 1976-1978 he participated in the organization of a number of avant-garde music festivals in Riga and Tallinn. Organizer and leader (in 1988-1991) of the Moscow festival of contemporary music "Alternative."
Head of the Old Music Ensemble of the Moscow Conservatory (1995 - 1997). Initiator and artistic director of the I Festival of Arnold Schoenberg at the Moscow State Academic Philharmonic (1999 ).
Lyubimov's repertoire includes solo, ensemble compositions and compositions for piano and orchestra of such authors, like I. S. Bach and his sons, F. Cooperen, J. F. Ramo, G. Purcell, V. A. Mozart, J. Haydn, D. Bortnyansky, L. van Beethoven, F. Schubert, R. Schumann, F. Chopin, F. List, I. Brahms, M. Glinka, A. Scriabin, S. Rachmaninov, K. Debussy, A. Schoenberg, A. Webern, A. Berg, C. Ives, I. Stravinsky, B. Bartok, E. Villa-Lobos, S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, D. Cage, V. Silvestrov, A. Pärt, V. Martynov, G. Ustvolskaya, A. Shnitke, S. Gubaidulina, E. Denisov, A. Volkonsky, G. Pelecis, A. Rabinovich, T. Mansuryan, A. Kneifel and others.
Since 1991 - Artistic Director of the Music Festival in St. Gallen (Switzerland). An active participant in various international festivals - the I. Menukhin festival in Gstad, G. Kremer in Lokenhaus, Berlin, Salzburg and many others.
Lyubimov performs with the largest domestic and foreign groups - orchestras conducted by K. Kondrashin, D. Oistrakh, N. Rakhlin, G. Rozhdestvensky, M. Pletnev, V. Ashkenazi, F. Bruggen, R. Norrington, E.-P. Salonena, K. Hogwood, K. Nagano, V. Yurovsky, N. Yarvi, A. Mustonen. Among his partners in the chamber ensemble more than once were T. Grindenko, N. Gutman, O. Kagan, G. Schiff, A. Steyer, M. Pekarsky, A. Rudin, V. Ivanova, L. Davydova, I. Monigetti, A. Mustonen, S. Savenko, Yu. Polubelov.
Lyubimov's deep understanding of various musical styles and manners, accuracy and virtuoso skill are appreciated by modern composers who trust him with the first performance of their own things, devote their opuses (G. Ustvolskaya, V. Silvestrov, V. Suslin, A. Pärt, V. Martynov, P. Karmanov and others). A. Schnitke wrote about him: "On the one hand, the multiplicity of details living under his fingers and penetrating with subjective expressiveness is striking...
