Biography

Was born in Moscow. In 1981 emigrated from the USSR to New York.

Education

Studied art and architecture in Moscow; in 1988 received the master's degree on experimental psychology in New York University, and in 1993 — doctor's degree in the field of Visual and Cultural Studies in the University of Rochester, having defended the dissertation on Engineering of Vision from Constructivism to Computers ("Designing of sight from constructivism to computers") in which investigated communication between the beginning of development of computers and vanguard of the 20th years.

Career

Heads Software Studies Initiative laboratory. Teaches at the university of California, San Diego (UCSD), in Visual Arts Department European Graduate School in Switzerland and at the De Montfort university in England.

Gives lectures in the California Institute of the Arts and in SCI-ARC in Los Angeles, at the university of California (UCLA), the university of Amsterdam, Stockholm University, the University of art and design in Helsinki, in the Center of art of Hong Kong, the Sigena university in Germany and at Getenbergsky school of art.

Professor of computer sciences of the City university of New York.

Scientific works

In 2017 there was the first book by Lev Manovich in Russian — the collection of articles "Theories Software Culture".
