2025: Prison sentence for embezzlement of 400 million rubles

On April 15, 2025, the Savelovsky District Court of Moscow found Marina Tsukanova, former chairman of the board of Bank Economic Union, guilty of embezzlement of funds from a credit institution. We are talking about damage in the amount of over 400 million rubles.

In March 2017, the Bank of Russia revoked the banking license from Bank Economic Union. The decision was made in connection with the credit institution's failure to comply with federal laws regulating banking activities, as well as Central Bank regulations. It is alleged that the bank, in case of unsatisfactory quality of assets, inadequately assessed the accepted risks. As a result, the organization did not ensure timely fulfillment of obligations to creditors.

In addition, according to the regulator's statements, the bank "was involved in conducting transit operations, as well as dubious operations related to the withdrawal of funds abroad." At the same time, the managers and owners of the bank did not take effective measures to normalize its activities. In terms of assets, Bank Economic Union as of February 1, 2017, that is, shortly before the revocation of the license, occupied 367th place in the banking system of the Russian Federation.

In addition to Tsukanova, her assistant Elena Zvereva, as well as the former head of the bank's cash operations department Natalya Fomina, the head of the cash desk Galina Telegova, the senior cashier Elena Romanova and their accomplices - Ekaterina Privalova, Olga Kozichar and Mikhail Goryunchik - were in the dock. All defendants received prison sentences - from three to 12 years, depending on the crimes committed. At the same time, the civil claim declared by the state corporation "Deposit Insurance Agency" in the interests of the bank in the amount of more than 400 million rubles was satisfied in full.[1]
