Maryanovsky Mark Grigorievich (April 25, 1890, Kyiv, Kyiv province of the Russian Empire - February 15, 1945, Buchenwald, Germany) - Russian composer, author of words and music of popular tango and foxtrots performed by Peter Leshchenko.

Biography

Mark Grigorievich Maryanovsky was born in Kyiv on April 25, 1890 in the prosperous family of the merchant of the First Guild Grigory (Gersh) Iosifovich Maryanovsky. At birth, he was named by his parents by the name Naftali-Meer. Mark received an excellent home education, corresponding to the status of the family of the merchant 1 Guild. Parents invited the best teachers for classes in basic subjects and in music. He continued his studies at the First Kyiv Commercial School and successfully graduated from it.

After the family moved to St. Petersburg in 1909, he entered the St. Petersburg Psychoneurological Institute.

In 1915 he married a Riga woman Sofya (Shifre) Eremiass (Jeremiass), their marriage was registered in Riga.

In 1916, the first-born Alexander appeared in Mark's family. After the October Revolution, Mark Maryanovsky and his family moved to Kyiv.

In October 1919, the Maryanovsky son Emanuel was born. They did not stay in Kyiv for long and in the early 1920s left for Riga to visit their wife's relatives. In Riga, Mark Maryanovsky received Latvian citizenship, became a co-owner of Marks Marjanovskis un Co, and also founded Markmari-Filma Marks Marjanovskis, a film rental company.

Music classes came in handy for Mark, he was seriously interested in composing. He composed not only music, but also texts in Russian. There is a statement that his son Alexander, a musician, a graduate of the Riga music studio Yulia Mayevsky in the piano class, provided professional assistance in recording his works to Mark Maryanovsky. Mark's grandson, his father said that his grandfather had an absolute ear, and he played the piano and accordion perfectly. Another argument is made by Mark the grandson, when Maryanovsky Sr. began to compose his songs, his father was small for professional help.

Mark Maryanovsky composed not only beautiful melodies, but also wrote poems to them. In the 1930s, he created more than 70 works, many of which were recorded on records by leading European recording companies. His tango and foxtrots were included in the repertoire of Pyotr Leshchenko, Konstantin Sokolsky and other famous singers of the early 20th century. There were songs written specifically "under Leshchenko."

Petr Leshchenko's repertoire includes 11 works by Mark Maryanovsky: Barcelona, ​ ​ Vanka is cute (Vanka sing), Love Wine, Dunya (Pancakes), Caucasus, Who are you?, Marfusha, Miranda, Nastya (Nastya-berry), Vodka Ryumka, Tatiana.

Of the works of Mark Maryanovsky that were not included in the repertoire of Pyotr Leshchenko, you can name the tango "Tell me where you are?," The foxtrots "Gingerbread Hotels" and "Marusi's Love," as well as the march "Sailor's Song." His foxtrots "Ryumka vodka," "Marfusha" and "Kavkaz" were translated into Polish ("Kieliszek czystej wódki," "Marfusza," "Na parkanie siedzi Jaś") and were widely known, performed by the best Polish singers. His songs were also translated into German and Latvian.

After Latvia joined the USSR, Maryanovsky and his family managed to avoid deportation to Siberia or Kazakhstan, where many residents of Latvia were sent. Later, this could only be regretted due to the outbreak of World War II. Only the youngest son, Gregory, managed to avoid German occupation, was drafted into the Red Army, fought in the 201st Latvian Rifle Division and died in June 1942 in a battle near Staraya Russa.

Soon after the German attack on the USSR, the Nazis placed all Riga Jews in a ghetto organized for them. Mark Grigorievich, his wife Sophia and middle son Emanuel were victims of the Holocaust. Their son Alexander was removed from the ghetto to the Nazi concentration camp Stutthof, created in 1939. In January 1945, in connection with the offensive of Soviet troops, the evacuation of the camp began. Many prisoners died, but Alexander was saved by music. The pianist was enrolled in the musical team, where he played the accordion and thanks to this he survived. He did not know anything about his father's fate for a long time. Only in 1947 in Riga from the testimony of witnesses it became known that Mark Maryanovsky got to Buchenwald, where he died on February 15, 1945.
